What is the Radiation Therapy

Radiation therapy or radiotherapy is a very effective modality of exterminating rapidly dividing cells like cancer cells. Therefore, it is widely used in treating cancer patients and is used in about 60% of all cancer patients as part of their treatment. Radiotherapy integrates the clinical sciences of medicine, oncology with the basic sciences of biology and physics. By studying and understanding the biology of the diseases, radiotherapy works by using high energy rays, such as X-rays or Gamma rays, targeted to hit unwanted cells. While radiation therapy is mostly used in treating many different kinds of cancer (Link to next section), it’s used in treating benign disease is also increasing especially after we have significant advancement inaccurate target treatment and minimal normal surrounding tissue radiation exposure.

How Radiation Is Used with Other Cancer Treatments
Radiotherapy is a very commonly used modality in the treatment of cancer. It has been estimated that more than 60% of all cancer patients will receive radiotherapy as part of their treatment. For some patients, radiation may be the only treatment needed. In other cases, radiation therapy is part of a more comprehensive treatment plan discussed amongst the patient and treatment team. Radiotherapy can be given alone, with other systemic agents, before or after surgery if needed, depending on the disease, stage, patient performance status, and other factors that the treatment team discuss with the patient. It is given as part of the definitive cancer treatment but is also a very important tool to improve the patient’s quality of life and to treat other benign diseases resistant to conventional treatment.
